There are three continuous modes as well, named Low, Medium and High. Low mode takes around 16 frames in a ten second period at full photographic resolution. It shoots a burst of four frames in the first second then starts to slow down until by five seconds, it's only taking around one frame per second. Medium gets a little faster taking five shots in the first second, but also slowing down and it ends up taking one extra shot in the ten second time period. High mode shoots at 9fps and also then slows down. We got 18 shots in ten seconds. The time it takes to load this information onto the memory card takes longer. We used Class 10 SDHC cards and it took just under 30sec to download each burst test.

Overall, in my time with the camera so far, I'm extremely pleased with the image quality of the A7 IV, at both low and higher ISOs. That said, given Sony's legacy of fantastic image quality with their full-frame Alpha cameras, I wasn't expecting a poor showing this latest camera. From a sheer detail perspective, there is a lot to like from this new 33MP full-frame camera, even with just JPEG images. Images straight-out-of the camera are crisp and sharp with lots of fine detail and well-controlled noise when shooting at higher ISOs. Colors look vibrant yet natural and not overly saturated when using the normal picture profile or the default "Standard" Creative Look.

SDR. I tested the M2 with movies on Blu-ray discs and a variety of broadcast and streaming TV shows, both with and without ambient light. In all cases, the image was more than acceptable for video clips in presentations and potentially acceptable for casual home use for watching full length movies. HDR. Using 4K UHD HDR versions of the same movies I used for the SDR viewing tests, and letting the Blu-ray player downconvert to 1080p HDR, there was no notable difference between HDR and SDR images on contrast, black level, shadow detail, or sense of three dimensionality. Color accuracy was also similar, although some colors, particularly reds, tended to be more oversaturated more often, even after lowering the saturation setting.
